Briercrest Men’s Hockey Wins Last Home Game of the Season
The Briercrest hockey team hosted Concordia University for their last home game of the season. Briercrest led in points and shots throughout the game and took home the win 4-3. The team said their goodbyes and honoured their graduating players Josh Anderson, Mark MacKinnon, Micah Abbott, and Dan Stollery for their hard work over the years.
The opening face-off was won by Briercrest who aggressively took control of the play. The period was full of energy displayed by both teams that resulted in multiple shots, but Briercrest goalie, Dan Dekoning, stayed solid in the crease. The first goal of the game was scored by Briercrest’s Austin Kozluk, assisted by Tysen Smith and Mark MacKinnon, giving the men a 1-point lead.
The second period saw more competition as Briercrest fought to keep their edge, and Concordia fought to steal it. Four minutes into the period, Steffen Tews for Briercrest scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Jamie Wuttunee and Chad Davidson. Shortly after Concordia pushed back and closed the gap by one. Scoring the goal for Concordia was Cory Santoro, assisted by Conner Dea and Jordan Busch. Briercrest’s second goal of the period was scored by Ben Feere, assisted by Austin Kozluk and Mark MacKinnon, finishing off the period with Briercrest in the lead 3-1.
The third period continued with the same level of intensity and saw Concordia bring the game back to a one goal difference. Scoring for the team was Aaron Petten, assisted by Conner Dea and Connor Reinson. Quickly after, Briercrest’s Joshua Mitton scored a short-handed goal, making that his eighth goal of the season, and putting his team up 4-2. The final goal of the game was made by Concordia player Cory Santoro, assisted by Chad Hurtubise and Matt Benko in the last minute. The game ended with Briercrest winning 4-3 and giving player of the game to senior player, #11 Josh Anderson.
Briercrest split the weekend, Concordia won Friday’s game 5-2. Player of the game for Briercrest was senior player #2 Mark MacKinnon. The men’s team will be heading to MacEwan University for their final regular season games before playoffs. Don’t miss the game live on ACAtv this weekend.
